La Voix - September 2017

Dear members,

With the unofficial end of summer just around the corner, we are jumping straight into the "offseason" with this edition of La Voix. So while things are relatively quiet on the surface, we have some really exciting developments in the works that we will be announcing as early as later this month. So stay tuned!

Board of Directors Elections

Fellow members:

If you’ve ever wanted to have a greater influence in the direction of our Club, now is your opportunity! Once a year our Club votes to elect members to serve on our Board of Directors, the 2017 BOD election will take place in only a few weeks. If you are passionate about La Grange and interested in participating at a higher level, we strongly encourage you to run for a seat on the Board. We always welcome new ideas and energy especially at the Director level.

This year, in compliance with the bylaws of Velo Club La Grange, we will be holding elections for four (4) seats, each carrying a two (2) year term on the Board of Directors. These four (4) seats are currently held by Joseph Duerr, Robert Efthimos, Rich Hirschinger and Brian Koester. Current seat holders may choose to run for re-election to the Board. The elections will be run on the following schedule:

Tuesday, September 5th through Wednesday, September 13th: Self Nomination Period.  A call for nominations announcement will be made on September 5th.  Any club member in good standing may run for one (1) of the four (4) open seats mentioned above.  Each member who wishes to run for election must submit a Self-Nomination Statement. Nothing fancy, just a few words to introduce yourself to the Club and why you’d be a good choice. Nomination Statements are to be submitted via email (**instructions to follow).

Friday, September 15th: Announcement of Candidates.  Nomination statements will be posted on the La Grange website.

Saturday, September 16th through Sunday, September 24th: Voting Period.  **Voting ballots and instructions will be sent individually by email.  PLEASE vote. Yes, your vote counts and matters!

Wednesday, September 27th: Election results announced.

Wednesday, October 11th: New Directors seated at November Board of Directors Meeting.
That's all for now and more to follow.

In the meantime, please consider running for the Board and start working on those nomination statements!

Best,

Joseph Santa Cruz
Secretary, Velo Club La Grange

Yes that is a check pinned to Lucy Archer's speedsuit! This year, Lucy raced her first season on the track, raced at all three velodromes in July (including the newly paved San Diego Velodrome), has been attending the Encino Women's Skills clinics to improve her skills AND had the gall to show up and race the Omnium at her first ever Elite Track State championships. Since she couldn't race at MBGP (no women's 4/5 or men's 5 category) she didn't race, but rode over to support and cheer. She's new to the team and shows up / gets involved.

Marco Fabrizio got hot in July winning back-to-back Cat 3 races as the CBR Criterium and 805 Thousand Oaks Grand Prix, but we'll really be impressed if he can convince a bank to cash that giant check.

I have a friend who is very excited about the upcoming South Bay Cycling Awards. She and others erroneously refer to this respected event as the “Wanky Awards.” Very insulting. Sad.

Anyway, my friend keeps hashtagging everyone #ewaw, for “Everybody Wants A Wanky.” This is super insulting. Please don’t call them the Wanky Awards. Disgusting.

This august event takes place on October 14 at 5:00 PM at Strand Brewing Co. in Torrance. The first three hours of this very prestigious award ceremony are spent giving beautiful, handmade horseshoe plaques to incredibly deserving recipients. Many people have waited a lifetime to get one of these.

From 8 to 10 it is a dance party, with lights, a DJ and a dance floor. We’ve also added a photo booth so that you can memorialize the seriousness of the event for your grandchildren.

What’s most awesome is that Velo Club La Grange has donated $1,500 to help make the event a success. It is a complete coincidence that VCLG members are now finalists for about half of all the awards. An award like this cannot be bribed or bought; each finalist was chosen based on merit alone.

VCLG’s contribution helps make it possible for the first 400 people to eat free and get free drink wristbands for their first couple of beers. So please arrive at 5:00 ready to eat if you are planning on a meal. The crowd will descend like locusts and once it’s gone, it’s gone. Also, once the venue’s capacity is reached, the doors will close and you will be forced to go next door to the brewery proper and listen to everyone else celebrate while you nurse a warm beer next to some fellow playing shuffleboard.

Patrick Barrett will also be providing his legendary barbecue for the lucky early arrivals.

Many have asked what the dress code is, and although we ask that you wear your best t-shirt if you can, many others will be dressed to the teeth and beyond. Co-announcer Rahsaan Bahati will be the sharpest dressed guy out there, so bring your A Game if the t-shirt basket is full and you want to cut a dashing figure on the dance floor.

This is the event’s fifth year, and we’re celebrating another solar cycle of fun, camaraderie, Strava doping, and rather hard-to-believe tales told ‘round the dinner table. Whether or not you made the final cut, I hope you’ll put this on your calendar and come support the men and women who are vying for top honors.

Because everybody wants a Wanky.

Cycling on the Internet
with Matthieu Delcourt

[Ed: This is Matthieu's swan song as a La Voix columnist, as he has now highlighted for you every cycling website in existence on the Internet (more or less). Thanks Matthieu! Now get back to climbing and riding us off your wheel!]

We’ve all been in the situation where we can’t upload our ride because the Garmin file is missing or corrupt!!! If it’s not on Strava it didn’t happen! That’s the hard truth! And it hurts when it’s a ride on the Stelvio or a PR on Piuma!

Fortunately there are few options to go around this that you can try:

- Plug your Garmin device to your computer and locate the directory “Activities”, the file might still be there

- If it’s absent you could still recover it using a free data recovery application such as Eeaseus: https://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/free-data-recovery-software.htm

- Probably your best bet would be to fix the .fit file directly on the Garmin Online Fit Repair Tool: http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ There you can upload your ride and re-download an uncorrupted version.

- You can also strip fields (such as power, heart rate etc) if you know they’re wrong for some reason or you can even combine multiple activities into one. To do so, just go to https://www.fitfiletools.com and re-upload the new file in Strava.

- Finally, worse case scenario, you could post on the Garmin forum and people in the community will help you and may fix it for you. You need to be logged in to post and attach your file:

https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-510-aa/110536-help-needed-for-a-corrupt-fit-file?fref=gc&dti=308730995883010

- A good factory reset of your Garmin may also help to prevent this to happen again

In any case, use your Strava app on your phone as a backup!!
