The Cedars-Sinai Grand Prix
at West LA College

Our Grand Prix is the biggest club event of the year. Volunteers are essential to its success. Sign-up NOW! to help ensure the safety of the racers and to cheer on one and all.

Note for Racers who Volunteer:
If you plan to race, please check the race schedule and sign up for a time slot that leaves sufficient time for your warmup and for the race itself.

  • Help raise money for the Scott Bleifer Scholarship by selling water, T-Shirts and raffle tickets.
  • Help cyclists who want to ride with blind and visually impaired riders for the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes.

Volunteer Positions

Course Marshals and Floaters:
On each shift, 12 marshals and 8 Floaters.
Minors may volunteer but must be at least 16 years old.
PLEASE ARRIVE 20 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SHIFT, in order to read the instructions, learn how to use the walkie-talkie, and walk to your assigned location.
Marshals keep cars and pedestrians from interfering with the racers, look out for dangerous debris in the road, and report accidents. Marshals should bring their own cell phone if possible.
Floaters cover for all the extra details, such as relieving a course marshal who needs to go to the bathroom or get food, running an errand, taking food, water and suntan lotion to the marshals at their location, selling water, or helping with registration. Floaters must remain on the race course premises for their shift, and must have a cell phone with them, so that they can be reached immediately if their services are needed. They are free to move about the course until they are called to duty.

Course Set-Up - Saturday:
Saturday Afternoon or Evening, 6 strong persons.
Set up hay bales, arrange barricades, clear debris from the course, etc.

Course Set-Up - Sunday, prior to the first Race:
Sunday Morning, 13 people: 10 for Setup and 3 to direct traffic.
Set up hay bales, arrange barricades, sweep up debris, put up tents, etc. Hot coffee and fresh bagels will await you!

Course Break-Down - Sunday, after the last Race:
Sunday Afternoon, 10 people
Take down barricades and tents, remove hay bales, load trucks. This work will start as soon as the last race ends.

Prime/Purse Disbursements - during the Races:
2 people, must be very familiar with race procedures.
Organize and disburse the primes and purses.


Volunteer Information

Directions to the Race and Parking
From the 405 Freeway north or south, exit at Jefferson and head east. Jefferson becomes Playa and then Overland. After approx. one mile, turn right onto Freshman Drive into the West L.A. College campus. There will be someone at the entrance to direct you to the appropriate parking area.

If coming from West LA on surface streets, go south on Overland and after crossing Jefferson, West LA College's Freshman Drive will be on your left.

Volunteer Check-In
All Course Marshals and Floaters must check in at least 20 minutes before the start of their shift, to leave time to acquire the Staff T-shirt, whistle, and name tag, and to read the instructions, and walk to the assigned location. Follow the signs to the Volunteer Check-in Table.

If you have a second, consecutive shift as a course marshal, please wait at your first position for your replacement to arrive, and then go directly to the designated position for your second shift, as quickly as possible. There is no need to check in again if there is no problem.

If you receive a walkie-talkie, please use it only when necessary (e.g., to call the Volunteer Coordinator if you need to take a break, if you see an accident, if you need water, etc.). Please keep them with you at all times. Give your radio to the Marshal who replaces you, or if you are working the last shift, turn it in to Susan Gans at the Volunteer Check-In Table. DON’T FORGET TO DO SO!!

Since many people ask to be assigned to the Start/Finish Line area, priority will be given to volunteers who meet certain criteria.

Food and Water
Coffee, bagels and water at the Volunteer Check-In Table in the morning. Volunteers working the afternoon shift will receive a coupon for lunch from the El Pollo Loco booth. The food and water is ONLY FOR VOLUNTEERS.

What to Bring
Sunscreen; hat; cell phone; your own full water bottle; snacks; folding chair; work gloves and broom for set-up and break down crews.

Bicycles
If you ride to the race, you can keep your bike with you if you are a Course Marshal. We cannot guarantee the security of your bike, but there will be someone at the Volunteer Check-In Table at all times - they can try to keep an eye on any bikes left there.

Kids
Whether or not it’s a good idea to bring your kid(s) depends on the kid. If they need a lot of your attention, it’s not a good idea. But several kids worked alongside their parents last year and were a big help and had a great time. Note: unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we’ll have enough T-shirts for all of the kids.
