NEW
YEAR'S DAY RIDE
77 Miles
Robert

(click

|
| Fairly flat with a couple
of rollers. Ride up the coast to Las Posas Road (this
is where PCH turns into a freeway - exit at Las Posas
and turn left, cross the overpass and then back onto
PCH back to Santa Monica. |
The group in the last few years have swelled
to about 150 - 200 riders so pace is whatever pace you decide
to ride. As with all group rides, there will be all speeds
so I'm sure anyone will find a group to ride with. There
will be no support vehicles as we've had in the past so
please be self sufficient to handle flats. There are plenty
of places to buy water, drinks and food along the route.
Usual optional stops are at Trancas at the Chevron station
and then at Neptune's Net.

followed
by
SLIDE
SHOW / TALK / Q & A
LaGrange member Bennett Ross
is the director of the Frostig Center, a non-profit organization
that specializes in working with children who have learning
disabilities.
For the past two years, this
event has had Frankie Andreu
and George Hincapie.
"Bob Roll should be a
real hoot! He is bringing a tape with all of the
out-takes from the OLN Tour coverage. He also promises a
bunch of great stories from the coverage and from his past.
And it will be "interesting" to see if Bobke
can still ride a bike."
This is a combination fun cycling event and a great chance
to help kids with significant disabilities. Save the date.
I hope you can join us.

The new and improved 9th annual Volvo
City of Angels Fun Ride is back!!! With a new start/finish
location, Sunday, April 30th at the Los
Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park (right behind
Dodger Stadium), the 38+ mile route will encounter
some new and unique sites. The ride starts at 7:30am.
|
Here is a wonderful opportunity for
some important and personal community give-back
by La Grangers!
The City
of Angels Funride is a major, local event in its
9th year and becoming a local tradition! It engages
riders from all over L.A. of all ages to benefit Childrens
Hospital of Los Angeles. Volunteers are needed to
serve as ride marshals assisting LAPD escorts, help
with guiding riders along city routes, registration
and handing out medals to riders at the finish line.

The Carpe Diem Santa Monica Classic. Run
a spectacular course, from the beach on through Main Street,
to a picture-perfect finish at the Santa Monica pier. While
youre running, check out the bay youre
helping to keep it clean for future generations. Cap the
day with a massage at the Expo out on the pier, let the
music from the after-party blow over you, and ponder this
question: "How can they name the first year of a race
a classic"?
|
As some of you
know, I have been working for almost 2 years to put
together a high-quality running event in Santa Monica.
The Carpe Diem Santa Monica Classic is happening on
Sunday, April 30th. I know many of you will be out
on rides that day, but if youre not, or if youre
looking for a cross-training opportunity, consider
the following highlights:
- Spectacular
point-to-point course covering Main St, Ocean Av
and San Vicente, and finishing at the Santa Monica
Pier.
- Technical Running
shirts for all participants
- All proceeds
benefit Heal the Bay
- Relax in the
Carpe Diem Recovery Lounge after the race

provided.

to see some of you at the starting line.

Drug Use
and Drug Testing in Elite Athletes:
Past, Present and Future
Thursday, June 15, 2006,
from 7 to 9 PM
Velo Club La Grange and L.A.
Tri Club are co-hosting a talk to be given by Gary Green,
MD, a worldrenowned expert in the field of drug testing
and drug education, on Thursday, June 15, 2006, from 7 to
9 PM, in the Community Room at Morts Palisades Deli,
1035 Swarthmore Ave., Pacific Palisades, CA. The talk is
being sponsored by the Pacific Palisades Medical Group.
Dr. Greens presentation
will begin with the history of performance-enhancing drug
use in elite athletes and continue to the present state,
including the use of EPO, blood doping, human growth
hormone and designer drugs, such as THG. There will
also be discussion regarding use of sports dietary supplements,
the constant cat and mouse game that goes on between
drug users and testers, and some of the testing strategies
that have been developed to deter the use of banned substances.
The talk will conclude with a look towards the future and
the use of genetic alterations that threaten to completely
redefine sports. Dr. Green promises that it will be a provocative
talk and raise many interesting issues.
Dr. Green currently maintains
a clinical practice at the Pacific Palisades Medical Group
and is a Clinical Professor in the UCLA Division of Sports
Medicine. He is a consultant to Major League Baseball on
anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, a researcher
at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, past Chairman
of the NCAA Committee on Drug Testing and Drug Education,
and author of numerous scientific papers on drug testing
and drug use in athletes. Dr. Green also serves on the U.S.
Soccer Medical Advisory Committee and is team physician
for Pepperdine University and the U.S. National Soccer Team.
Parking is available in back
of Morts Deli and on the street. You can (and are
encouraged to) purchase food and beverages at the Deli.

The Liquid Fitness /
La Grange developmental rides are a series of workshops
specifically geared towards new cyclists and new members
of the club. During the rides, we focus on developing skills,
riding safely and efficiently as well as pack etiquette.
With the Cedars-Sinai
Grand Prix race coming up, we thought it would be
a nice change of pace to ride over to the course and do
a few laps to see what the racers have in store for them.
The West L.A. College course is so challenging that it provides
a perfect example of how riding smart and conserving energy
can make the difference between staying with the group or
going off the back, so that will be the focus of this particular
ride.
In addition, I will be sticking
around to do some intervals on the course for those who
are in the mood for a little pain.
You can either meet us at Peets
on San Vicente at 6:30 and ride over to the college with
the group or meet us at parking lot 5 a few hundred meters
down the main road that leads into the college. The college
is located off of Overland just south of Jefferson.
See you out there.

One of
La Grange's partners in the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's
Office needs immediate help!
Our partners in the Malibu/Lost Hills Station
of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have asked
for our help.
Last week, the pursuit of a robbery suspect
by a Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Deputy riding motorcycle
detail end in life-threatening tragedy. Reportedly the robbery
suspect ran down the deputy who sustained severe injuries
and needs blood.
Sergeant Phil Brooks who is the head of
traffic for Lost Hills and whose deputies patrol PCH has
asked La Grange for help in supporting his deputy. Phil
serves along-side La Grange on Senator Kuehl's PCH Safety
Task Force and has stepped up for us!
Please donate blood at the Malibu/Lost

between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Simply show up at the station.
