The 2003 Piuma Hill Climb Championship will be staged on Sunday, September 28th at 9 a.m. on the same challenging course as last year as devised by Bryan "Marquis de Sade" McMahon. It's a mass start event (i.e. this is not a time trial) beginning at the base of Piuma Road. Riders will fight up the 5.4-mile climb to the summit of Piuma, speed down a technical one-mile descent, make a very treacherous off-camber left turn onto Schueren Road, and climb another 1.8 miles to the intersection of Schueren and Stunt Roads at Saddle Peak Avenue. The entire route is 8.2 miles long with 2,260 feet of climbing.
In addition to crowning an overall king and queen of the mountains, you'll be battling it out to be champion of one of the following USCF categories:
- Men's Cat. 1
- Cat. 2
- Cat. 3
- Cat. 4
- Cat. 5/public
- Women's Cat. 1 /2
- Cat. 3
- Cat. 4/public
- Master's 45+
- Master's 55+
The champions of the ten USCF categories will be honored. If you do not have a USCF racing license, you will compete in the public category or in the appropriate Master's category.
This competition is only open to Velo Club La Grange Westwood members. All club members are encouraged to participate. No entry fee will be charged and registration is not necessary. Simply wear your Minute Maid/Dasani-La Grange uniform. Helmets are mandatory and all USCF rules apply including the yellow centerline rule (i.e. do not cross it or you will be disqualified). Be advised that the roads will be open to traffic so please be careful. All decisions made by the chief official are final. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded at the annual club picnic, which follows The Piuma Hill Climb Championship.
There will be a follow vehicle to carry your personal belongings to the finish line, but use it at your own risk (i.e. you are responsible for anything that you put in the vehicle). Clif Bars, Clif Shots and water will be available for all competitors just past the finish line.
For those that want to ride to the start, a group will meet at the corner of San Vicente & Ocean at 7:30 a.m.
If you wish to volunteer to help stage the competition, please contact Rick Scott at greatscottpr@pacificnet.net.
